98. Quest for Festival Mild in Oxford, Monday 8th May 2006

As previously recorded, George Gale's do a magnificent Festival Mild. The previous week we had noted that it might be on in Fuller's pubs; today was the day to find it. Getting the bus into town, we started at the Head of the River, a pub seldom visited on account of it being full of boatie twats on occasion during the year. This time was OK. Alas! there was no Festival Mild, but the Discovery quenched a thirst that we had worked up. Retracing our steps we went to the Oxford Union Society which appeared to have been renovated since our last visit. The upholstery on the chairs had been fixed and the place cleaned a bit, but still traditional as ever. Prices had remained low as we managed to pay a pound a pint for Tetley's.

Despite the fact that the Three Goats Heads has no real beer, we decided to pay it a visit and were pleasantly surprised. It is still a ridiculously cheap pub for the centre of Oxford and the crowning glory on our visit was the Ayinger Weiss Beer which was actually very pleasant and far less soapy than Hoegaarden - almost moving towards Dunkel Beer - at decent prices on par with lager at other pubs. We will be going back. An obligatory visit to Far from the Madding Crowd was made, and they had a good selection on for a Monday and I got some Mild although it was West Berks, it was still very good.

A walk to Jericho next and the Harcourt Arms. Alas! there was no Mild but John the bar man assured us that it would be on the next week so we will take him up on this promise. We did however have an excellent pint of Gales HSB although at £3 a pint this is a bit steep. Nonetheless, the pub remains one of the best in Oxford. There was time for one more, a pint of White Horse that was decidedly on the turn, in the Radcliffe Arms. I haven't been here in quite a while, and a few changes have been made although the pub remains essentially the same. The food prices have gone up, they've rotated the seats by the big screen through 90° and even installed a flat screen TV for those wanting to watch football - could be a hidden gem during the World Cup!
