97. Midweek session in Headington, Tuesday 2nd May 2006

For no particular reason apart from the sake of it, Dave and I decided to go on a bit of a tour of Headington one Tuesday evening and do a few pubs that we hadn't seen for a while. We got on a 7 bus and half an hour later finally alighted in Headington whence we made progress towards the White Hart in Old Headington. On the way we went past the Black Boy which was empty and not surprisingly so as there was no beer to be had. The White Hart was once again very good with not only some Everards offerings but also Hadda's Headbanger and another reasonably odd beer. Both were excellent quality although a little pricey. This is a nice pub with secluded corners and would be a fine place to while away some hours I think they even have a beer garden.

Coming back into the centre of Headington we made our way next down some backstreets to the Butcher's Arms, the wonderful Fuller's pub with seating all the way around the periphery. Sadly, the beer choice was not as good as we had hoped and we had to content ourselves with halves of, albeit very good, London Pride. Much annoyance was noted when we discovered that George Gale's Festival Mild was off. This had been extremely well received on a previous crawl. Needing already to step up the pace, we made haste to the Mason's Arms that we had only been to once before, and in quite a pissed state. This time we could appreciate it. They had about four decent beers on and two of these were their own products and they were pretty good. The pub has a smart interior with a good amount of bar frontage and a sensible use of space. It's down a stupid little road though.

Just across the way is the Chequers, a big chain like pub with not alot going on and quite a vacuous interior although they were at least doing a bit of Spitfire for us to have a swift half of. Traipsing back into the middle of Headington we had time for a couple more. First up was the Royal Standard, one of those pubs done up with Morrells tat some time ago, although it appeared that the tat was still very much in evidence. We had to have IPA, which was reasonable, rather than the Abbot or Fireside (which was off anyway). The Britannia was the final stop and once again quite good although the choice wasn't quite as good as before - we went for Old Hooky which was a decent pint, before sitting on a return bus to Kidlington (in some discomfort in the latter stages in my case).
