99. Don't go to Atlanta, there is nothing to see or do, Saturday 13th May to Thursday 18th May 2006

A business trip overseas provides some sort of opportunity to squeeze in some new pubs. Atlanta is no exception, although the complete lack of anything to do made for a rather dull trip. Starting early, I had a couple of halves to steady the nerves in Lloyds No 1 and the Red Lion airside at Gatwick Airport's North terminal. Both pubs are Wetherspoons offerings and were actually offering one real beer in the shape of an offering from a local Sussex brewery. That's about that is all that was good - the clientele was largely composed of chavs.

One plane ride later and it was time to investigate Atlanta's CNN Center, which is curious in that there are no shops to speak of, only food outlets. Some do beer, but I was more interested in Jocks and Jills, a pulsating sports bar with loads of TV sets, but no football. Still, there were about a dozen beers on including the local Sweetwater, and they were cold and tasted quite nice. McCormick and Schmicks in the CNN Center was a little more restrained and had nearly as many beers. It was good to perch at the bar with colleague Mr Dean Eastbury and order the restaurant speciality, fish, washed down with more beer.

The following day was long and memorable for a futile attempt to find any worthwhile shops. After dinner however, the opportunity was taken to get the hotel bar, Latitudes, done and consume extortionately priced uninspired beer whilst sitting in comfy chairs. This is what the company credit card is for. Keeping the Monday amazingly beer free, Tuesday saw a conference social event to go and watch the Atlanta Braves. In the CNN Center is a Mexican cantina, Don Juan, that did flatulent sanitised fake Mexican food although they also had drinks, including the Modelo Negre Mexican beer or whatever it is called that was actually very good. The opportunity to have an expensive Budweiser at the game was also not missed.

Coverage of recognisable sports resumed the following afternoon with a trip to the Brewhouse somewhere to the North East of Atlanta and accessible by Marta train. This was recommended to us as a place to watch the Champions' League final and it was pretty good with a loud and busy atmosphere. It was hard to see exactly what they had on, but with an Irish influence it was inevitable that imported British beer was for sale. Some fellow British drinkers spent a considerable time shouting obscenities at the TV.

The following day, on the way home I did my final two Atlanta bars at the airport, terminal E. Images was a busy pub where I sat at the bar and had to wait an age for service, and all I wanted was a Bud Light. I doubt, fortunately, that I will ever be back there. Haussmann was slightly better as it was a little quieter and had Sam Adams lager on which is a fine beer. Still grossly expensive and artificial though.

The rather shit write up in this case merely serves to increment the number of crawl write ups up by one, so that a more appropriate one can be listed as 100. Seeing as I have absolutely no intention to return to Atlanta I thought that I had better write something up...
